Saint Matt calls the Shots

The last time an Aldershot team was in the Football League, this guy was scoring wonder goals for fun in the old Division One.

Matt Le Tissier was full of advice for the newly promoted Shots as he spoke at a dinner to thank the team’s corporate sponsors for their support over the past season.

The event, hosted at Farnborough’s Holiday Inn hotel, was also a call to arms for businesses in the area to lend their support to the League’s newest members.

The Holiday Inn, previously known as the Queen’s Hotel, has just signed up as a sponsor for the Shots and the club hopes that other businesses will follow suit.

More than 100 people from the business community came to the black tie event, orga-ised by Nicky Banger, the newly appointed commercial manager at Aldershot Town, including current sponsors Covers, Storage King, Indigo Press, Charters and Airways Optical.

Guests Le Tissier and former Premiership referee Dermot Gallagher spoke about their football experiences and had some top tips for Aldershot on maintaining their place in the higher echelons of the English game.

The dinner was followed by an auction and raffle, which together raised more than £10,000 for the Shots.

Some of the prizes on offer included boxing gloves signed by Mike Tyson, signed prints of Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, a cruise on a 45ft powerboat and a fortnight in a villa in Cyprus.

Mr Banger thanked hotel manager Max Ball and his team for an enjoyable evening.

“The evening was a huge success thanks to the pro-fessionalism of Max and his staff,” he said. “We’ll certainly be encouraging away teams to use the hotel.”

Mr Banger is planning a series of events to encourage business involvement with the Shots, the next being a golf day planned for June 24.
