Jobs without a desk in sight
By Rebecca Connop PriceJune 25, 2009
A FLEET mum has launched a new recruitment website to help jobseekers who do not want to be tied to their desk all day.
Rebecca Thompson, of Aldershot Road, launched www.jobswithoutdesks.com last month.
Roles advertised on the site cover everything from voluntary work in the UK to ski jobs in the Alps.
The new site lets visitors browse jobs in different categories, as well as read information about courses.
There is also impartial advice on how to increase your chances of securing the role you want.
After Mrs Thompson was made redundant from her job in the mobile phone industry in September, she decided to launch her own business.
“I could not find a part-time job that would pay enough for me to pay even for my daughter’s nursery fees, which is why I wanted to start working for myself,” she said.
Since the launch of the business on May 12, the site has been steadily growing, with more than 150 people visiting every day.
Although she does not keep details on who is visiting the site, the mum-of-one said the jobs on offer tend to cater for young people. But there are also jobs for more experienced people, such as ski resort managers, on offer.
But the recession has meant there are fewer business owners who want to advertise on more than one site, adding: “Business has been pretty good so far, there are ups and downs because of the current economic situation, but a lot of people seem to be interested in seasonal or overseas work.
“There is no question that finding work is more difficult than it has been for the past few years. But there are still plenty of exciting options out there available to people of all ages at all stages of their careers.”
Mrs Thompson’s husband Chris runs holiday company, Farnborough-based Ski Famille, so she had ready-made links with the ski industry.
The 35-year-old, who grew up in Fleet and attended Calthorpe Park School, has also spent a lot of time in seasonal jobs overseas, so she understands the appeal of that kind of work.
Before moving back to Fleet two years ago, she taught English as a second language in Greece, Indonesia, Ecuador and Spain.
Jobswithoutdesks.com is designed to inspire and inform job seekers as well as put them in touch with potential employers.
As part of the launch, Mrs Thompson is offering new recruiters three months of free advertising.
