Stunning gardens opened to public

2/ 7/2008

A stunning garden is being opened to the public for charity.

John Selfe opens his prized garden at Whispers in Chatter Alley, Dogmersfield, as part of the National Garden Scheme (NGS) on July 6.

The two-acre garden features wide sweeping lawns interspersed with large borders of vibrant colour, texture and form for an all year display.

There are a wide variety of plants and trees, including many from the southern hemisphere.

One of the highlights is a spectacular waterfall that disappears below a terrace.

Other features include a gazebo, a bamboo tea house, a rockstone seat, kitchen garden and greenhouse.

Mr Selfe will offer mulching master classes during the garden opening from midday to 5pm.

Home made teas will also be available.

Admission is £3 for adults and free for children with proceeds going to the NGS, which raises £2million each year for nursing, caring and gardening charities.

Since being formed in 1927, the scheme has raised more than £40m, with £22m being raised in the last ten years.

The head office is small so most of the money goes straight to the charities it supports.

Every year, NGS gardens across England and Wales welcome over half a million visitors. Most of the 3,600 gardens are privately owned.

In 1980, The National Gardens Scheme Charitable Trust was established as an independent charity and four years later Macmillan Cancer Relief joined the list of charities benefiting from donations.

Other charities to benefit from money raised by the NGS include the Gardeners’ Royal Benevolent Society, the Royal Gardeners’ Orphans Fund, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Help the Hospices and Crossroads Caring for Carers.
