Disabled comedian no ordinary stand up performer

It wouldn't strictly be true to describe Laurence Clark as a stand-up performer. In fact, his routine is performed entirely from his wheelchair.

Clark has no hang-ups about using his disability (he was born with cerebral palsy) as an inspiration for his comedy and his latest show 12% Evil will delight fans at the West End Centre on Friday May 23, but the faint-hearted may want to look away.

This is not a show for the politically correct.

“Ever woken up in the morning, looked in the mirror and decided to devote your life to wreaking vengeance on the world because you’re disabled?” poses Clark in the starkest terms.

“According to the movies this is how many super-villains break into their profession.”

So get ready to witness the lampooning of the celluloid afflicted, from Dr Strangelove, Bond villain Blofeld, and Darth Vader, through to Freddie Krueger.

However, Clark mischievously adds Heather Mills-McCartney to the list of those to be on the receiving end.

Disability is no reason to be spared being the butt of a joke in the world of Laurence Clark.

“My outlook on life as a disabled person shapes my comedy,” he says proudly.

However, prejudice he clearly has no truck with.

“Responding to Jim Davidson cancelling a show when wheelchair users were in the audience, I vowed to cancel if Jim turned up!”

Taboo subjects are always a challenge for comics and Clark was an obvious choice as a script adviser and contributor on a two-part BBC radio documentary on comedy and disability.

He was also once a guest reporter for Newsnight, writing and presenting a film about disability and the Abortion Act.

But perhaps his most memorable moment was the result of a dubious jest from a certain former Prime Minister’s wife.

“A predictably crap joke by Cherie Blair about me being a sit-down comic at a Labour Party Conference got me splashed across every tabloid in the country. Sometimes what counts is not the joke itself, but the person telling it!”

Seats are £10 (£8 concessions). Telephone the West End Centre on 01252 330040 to book or check out the website at www.westendcentre.co.uk.
