Farnborough bands rock GuilFest

Critics have been predicting the death of the Farnborough music scene ever since the closure of the Tumbledown Dick on Farnborough Road in February - but two of the town’s best loved bands were flying the flag at GuilFest over the weekend.

Following in the footsteps of local favourites Reuben and Hundred Reasons, Kenelis and The Fins produced energetic performances to silence the doubters.

Speaking before their set at the Stoke Park festival, guitarist James admitted the closure of the pub was a huge loss to The Fins.

“The Farnborough music scene has produced so many good bands, but since the closure of the Tumbledown Dick we are the music scene in Farnborough!” he said.

“But it’s great to have something like GuilFest going on so close.

“Last year was a great year for GuilFest, and this year we’re going to make it better.”

The five-piece are certainly not afraid to take matters into their own hands.

They are in the process of starting their own record label after becoming frustrated with a lack of mainstream outlets for their music.

Bass player Rauf said: “We decided earlier this year that we had to put something out to get noticed, because not many people around the country have heard of us, so we figured we’d start our own record company."

The band are hoping to release their first single, Adapter, in October.

Meanwhile, fellow Farnborough rockers Kenelis drew widespread praise for their set in the Rock Sound Cave as they returned to GuilFest for the second year running.

“It’s not like other festivals,” said lead singer Mel Sanson.

“You walk round the festival and everybody is having a good time, there’s a good atmosphere.”

Kenelis have also hinted at going down the route of releasing their music independently, and have already offered fans a track to download for free from their website.

Mel said the band put a lot of emphasis on their live show, and they promise to entertain their fans as they continue to tour the country over the summer.

“We just go for it really, we just give it our all.

“We’re not posers, we don’t worry about what we look like, we’re just really into the music.”
