Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra treat Aldershot
January 07, 2013
Don’t miss a fantastic opportunity to hear one of Britain’s world-class orchestras in Aldershot this month.
Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra will be performing a programme of some of the most beautiful melodies and breathtakingly emotional works that classical music has to offer at the Princes Hall, Aldershot, on Friday January 18, at 7.45pm.
Join the BSO for a concert that celebrates the magic of a great tune. And great tunes abound in the programme, from the soaring mellifluous Vocalise by Rachmaninov to the haunting tragedy of When I am Laid from Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas, as well as the beautiful violin solo from Massenet’s Thaïs and perhaps one of the most famous melodies of all time – the largo from the New World Symphony – as used in the Hovis advert.
The premiere of the New World Symphony in New York was a huge success and was proclaimed in the US as “the greatest symphonic work ever composed in this country”. Remaining incredibly fresh and abounding with memorable melodies, it describes Dvorák’s own spiritual and emotional journey from his intense longing for his beloved Bohemia to the thrill of the “new world” and its varied peoples.
The BSO has remains at the forefront of the UK orchestral music scene, continuing to serve communities across the South and South West of England, and extending its influence across the whole of the UK and internationally with regular festival appearances, an extensive catalogue of recordings and continued live broadcasts on BBC Radio 3.
It is one of the most dynamic and innovative symphony orchestras in the UK today, performing over 120 concerts the length and breadth of the UK, regularly appearing at venues in the South West, Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, Nottingham, Manchester and Gateshead, and festivals such as Lichfield, Henley and Cheltenham.
The BSO also performs in numerous London venues including St Paul’s Cathedral, the Royal Opera House, and the Barbican plus regular appearances at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. World-wide tours have seen them play at Carnegie Hall and the Lincoln Center, New York; Concertgebouw, Amsterdam; Musikverein and Konzerthaus, Vienna; Rudolfinum, Prague; and Philharmonie, Berlin. The performance of A Celebration of Melody in Aldershot will also count with soloist Amyn Merchant on piano and will be conducted by José Serebrier. Tickets priced at £15 adult and £7.50 child are available from the box office on 01252 329155 or at www.princeshall.com.
