Band aim for top spot this Christmas

A Farnborough band are hoping to make history by achieving a number one record this Christmas.

Rock outfit Kenelis are aiming for the top of the chart when they release the second single Drained from their debut album Remember How It Felt on December 15.

According to lead singer Mel Sanson's calculations, the five piece, who performed at this year's GuilFest in July, could make it to the top spot if they sell 275,000 copies of the record.

"It seems like an unrealistic target but actually it is something anybody can do," Sanson said.

"If people from shows like X Factor can get to Christmas number one by selling 275,000 copies in a week, why can't we?"

Kenelis have shared the stage with the likes Fightstar and Newcastle-based band Your Codename is: Milo.

The band formed at an exciting time when acts such as Hundred Reasons, whose vocalist Colin Doran was born and bred in Aldershot, and Camberley-based three piece Reuben, who split earlier this year, were negotiating lucrative deals with record labels and laying down future hit records.

Sanson said she believed the band's ability to survive past this period without losing hope of hitting the big time paid testament to their commitment.

She said: "Kenelis were around at a time when the scene in Aldershot, Farnborough and Camberley was incredible.

"Bands like Hundred Reasons and Reuben were everywhere.

"We are one of the few bands of that era who are still making music and that is down to the fact that we are hardworking.

"We are signed to our own indie label Black Grass Roots which we run.

"For a small band like us it takes a lot of work to get anywhere which is why we thought trying to get to Christmas number one would be a good idea.

"It's something all our fans, friends and family can get involved with and help us to do.

"If everyone buys the single at 79p they can be part of something big."
