Horrocks voices Fifi and The Flowertots

12/ 8/2008

The actress who played the main character in the hit British film Little Voice lends her dulcet tones to children’s phenomenon Fifi Live, which comes to Aldershot’s Princes Hall this autumn.

Jane Horrocks’ recorded voices of both the prim and proper Primrose and Fifi in TV show The Fairy and The Flowertots can be heard alongside professional actors dressed in costume on October 30 and 31.

The plot centres around the goings-on during a windy day in the Flowertot garden when a magical fairy is blown on to the scene — but her wand has been swept away. She is lost without it and can’t get home.

But the Flowertots, including Fifi Forget-Me-Not, Violet, Primrose and Bumble, could be thwarted in their quest to find it by the mischievous and madcap Slugsy and Stingo.

The show is the brainchild of Keith Chapman, who devised Bob The Builder.

“I’m not surprised that Fifi has been such a success,” said Horrocks, who was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her portrayal of timid singer LV in 1998’s Little Voice.

“When they were talking about a female version of Bob for girls, I thought that it would do extremely well and it has. There’s something in it for all the kids.

“Keith’s a clever guy and the music’s catchy and the animation is beautiful. Fifi definitely isn’t just for the children as she certainly appeals to adults too.

“My dresser on my last theatre job told me that Fifi woke her up like an alarm clock every morning as she watched an episode and then went to work. It was really sweet as she doesn’t even have children.”

Horrocks, most familiar as Bubble in Absolutely Fabulous, also voiced Fifi and Primrose in an American version of the show.

“I decided that Primrose was a bit of a Los Angeles WAG-type person, like a character in that film Mean Girls. Fifi’s drawl though, I did much more like somebody from Middle America, who usually sound much sweeter and softer.”

Horrocks, who also did voices on Chicken Run and Christmas Carol: The Movie, took two years off to spend time with her children Dylan, 11, and Molly, nine. She admits they were a big factor in her being the voice of Fifi and Primrose.

“I consciously didn’t work as much when my daughter was young. I did a whole series of Absolutely Fabulous during that time, but I was very focused on her. Now that they are much more self-sufficient they are fine about me working, but they do miss me a lot as I have done a couple of theatre jobs back to back. That’s why voice-over work is so handy when you have a family. I’m fortunate to have this other career.”

Tickets for the 1pm and 3.30pm performances on both days are £12 for adults and £10 for children. Call 01252 329155 or visit www.princeshall.com to book.
