Youth theatre calls for enthusiastic new members
By Hannah KurzawskiSeptember 02, 2011
A DRAMA group for youngsters is calling for any budding young actors, singers and dancers to star in its latest performance.
The Princes Hall Youth Theatre in Aldershot is looking to make dreams of stardom come true with the new term starting this month.
Organisers said members could learn all about drama, acting and theatre, while making friends and having fun.
The scheme is aimed at children with a passion for performing, offering a great opportunity to build up confidence in a relaxed and supportive environment.
Classes are held once a week, and are split into three age categories, with groups for five to eight-year-olds, nine to 11-year-olds and those aged between 12 and 16.
Each term has a set theme or project to focus on, and students work towards putting on a final presentation performed in front of family and friends.
Children of all abilities are welcome, with the only requirement being plenty of enthusiasm.
Dougal Irvine, a professional actor and teacher of the youngest classes, said he was impressed with the number of children returning to the Youth Theatre term after term.
Mr Irvine, familiar to Aldershot audiences from the Princes Hall's panto season, is set to tread the boards again in this year's show, as he takes the title role in Aladdin.
"It's great to see shy, quiet kids interacting with others and growing in self-confidence as the weeks progress," he said.
"Not only do they build essential life skills, they also thoroughly enjoy themselves at the same time, and leave each class with a smile."
A typical class begins with drama games to "loosen everyone up", as used by professional actors.
The children are then able to concentrate on upcoming performances or certain aspects of acting, such as theatre tricks, props, voice projection and accents.
Classes start on Tuesday, September 6 and then Saturday, September 10.
