Active wardens can negate meter need

May 01, 2008

WITH reference to the present parking position in North Camp, I understand that parking in the past was being abused by people overstaying and thus denying genuine shoppers from parking.
There never seemed to be any traffic wardens on duty to rectify the situation. However, since parking meters have been installed I notice that on Saturday, April 26, they now seem to patrol in pairs.
If they had been more active in the past, parking meters would not have been needed.
The parking in Salisbury Road, however, has never been a problem. To put parking meters there would penalise mainly the sick, elderly and poor who by necessity, not choice, have to visit the doctor, chemist or dentist.
I believe I am right in saying that Rushmoor Council makes a considerable profit from these parking charges.
The editor’s suggestion that a solution might be to issue free two-hour parking tickets is not new. Surrey Heath Council issue free parking disks for their Bagshot car park. These are free from local shops.
Once acquired all one has to do is to set the time of arrival on the parking disk and abide by the parking notice regulations at the parking place. And it works.
