University of Reading research helps stem cell treatment

December 31, 2012

New research from The University of Reading could make it up to 5,000 times cheaper for stem cells to be transported – by putting them in the post.

The study, which could lead to cheaper, wider and more effective stem cell research and treatment of illnesses such as cancer and heart disease, found that stem cells can be stored at room temperature in a special gel instead of being frozen using dry ice or liquid nitrogen.

Using semi-permeable hydrogel would allow stem cells to be mailed out to laboratories and used immediately on arrival.

Leading the research is Dr Che Connon who has been awarded a grant to £735,000 by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council to progress his work.
