How to buy the correct oven this Christmas
November 29, 2011
With the Christmas turkey waiting to be cooked many households will find that their current oven doesn’t look quite up to the job. Making sure that you have the right cooker or oven for the festive season is essential for all households, but how can you make sure you buy the right oven this Christmas?
Ovens are generally of two types, gas ovens, and electric ovens. Some electric ovens are known as convection ovens, which use a circulating fan to move hot air around the food in the oven. So, with so many options available for the customer, choosing the right oven can be a difficult task.
These ovens are available in standard and convection types. They can be built into a wall, cabinet or placed under a counter. When buying a wall oven one has to look into the convenience it offers. These are good for people who entertain or for kitchens with restricted space. They can also be mounted at a comfortable height, making it easier for people to gain access to the appliance.
Electric ovens these days are multifunctional and often use a combination of top, bottom, and grill functions. Those which are fan assisted may allow the fan speeds to be adjusted according to the different cooking, baking and grilling requirements. Electric ovens are more versatile compared to gas ones and are often affordably priced.
Gas ovens remain a popular choice for many households but do have one main disadvantage. This is that they are often hotter at the top and cooler at the bottom, meaning heat is not distributed evenly. The main advantage, however, is that gas is often cheaper than electricity meaning that energy bills may be lower for those with gas ovens.
Buying A New Oven
Once you decide on which type of oven to purchase, some important tips to be considered are as follows:
- What is the capacity of the oven?
- How many shelves are there and are they fitted with safety stops, to prevent them from accidently falling out?
- Is there a grill tray?
- What functions/additional features does the oven have? Is there a pre-set or timer function?
Styles of Oven
Within the different types of oven there are also a number of different styles. These include double ovens, which have two distinct ovens stacked on-top or next to one another and are perfect for individuals who bake and grill at the same time.
Then there are internal and external grill options. External grills are versatile and keep the main oven cavity clean from mess. Internal grills are more commonly found, and save space whilst giving direct heating.
There are numerous varieties of oven available in the market, with different finishes, colour options and additional features. Individuals should always consider their requirements when looking into new oven purchases and should take advantage of the offers and discounts available over the Christmas period to make sure they don’t pay more than is necessary.
