Employees build school garden for Give and Gain Day
By Laura NightingaleJuly 27, 2010
HUNDREDS of children can enjoy a quiet zone and allotment area on their school grounds after staff from three businesses in Aldershot and Guildford helped out with a new green project.
As part of the annual employee volunteering event, Give and Gain Day, 60 workers from Dairy Crest, CSC and Stevens & Bolton gave up time in the office to transform an overgrown derelict piece of land at Connaught School, in Aldershot.
Raised garden beds were created, compost bins were built, undergrowth cut back and trees planted.
And as if that was not enough, an additional challenge on the day was to provide a water supply to the reclaimed area.
In temperatures of up to 30 degrees, the volunteers dug a trench more than 100m long to hold the new pipe, which will enable 750 students to fully maintain the garden into the future and grow a range of produce which will be used in the school’s catering.
Give and Gain Day on July 9 was dedicated to getting thousands of employees out of the workplace and volunteering in their local communities.
Lindsey Abbott, head teacher of Connaught School, said: "It is fantastic that employees from Dairy Crest, CSC and Stevens & Bolton dedicated their time to help schools like ours.
"We are all part of the same community, and Give and Gain Day just shows how powerful it is when we work together."
