It was a gem of a day for Gerald and Jean Sweeting, of Star Lane, Ash, as they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

The day was celebrated with lunch at Squires Holt Restaurant on the Hog's Back, with family, friends and neighbours.

Later in the evening there was another get together at their home.

Gerald was born at 2 Dukes Terrace, Aldershot, opposite the Cambridge Hospital, and worked in Standings model shop in Short Street, followed by spells at the Ritz cinema and Burton's men's shop.

During the war he was an air gunner with the RAF. After the war he went into insurance, and helped many local people to become homeowners.

While at Burtons he met his wife to be, Jean Wilkinson, who was also born in Aldershot, living in Mount Pleasant Road opposite the old East End School.

They married in 1942 at Aldershot Registry Office and their first home was in Mount Pleasant Road.

Among their cards was one from the Queen and the couple said it was "a great day, from morn till night."
