Airport road closed after double heathland fire

Twenty firefighters from across north-east Hampshire tackled two fires on heathland next to Blackbushe Airport in Yateley on Friday afternoon

Two heathland fires closed the main road next to Blackbushe Airport for more than an hour on Friday afternoon.

Using hoses, foam and beaters, 20 firefighters from Hartley Wintney, Rushmoor and Fleet stations tackled blazes either side of the A30 in Yateley at just after 1pm.

Around three hectares of the heath and gorse was affected by the flames, which were fully extinguished by 2.45pm.

A spokesman for Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We are going to monitor the area just in case there are repeated fires."

Tony Miles, deputy airport manager at Blackbushe Airport, confirmed there had been a blaze but said it had not affected flights into and out of the airport.

The same stretch of road was closed last summer when a recycling lorry went up in flames.
