Aldershot pub makes bid to open until 3.30am

Concerns that residents may be "kept up all night" if Yates's pub is open until 3.30am

Allowing an Aldershot pub to remain open until 3.30am will “cause havoc” according to objectors to proposed changes in its licensing hours.

Stonegate Pub Company wants to extend hours at the Yates’s in Victoria Road on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

The original premises licence at Yates’s Aldershot was granted in November 2005.

The applicant wants to extend the hours for the sale of alcohol from 2am to 3am on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and move closing time from 2.30am to 3.30am on those days.

The pub, near the Arcade shopping Centre, opens at 9am daily but permission is being sought to amend the start time to 7am.

Councillor Charles Choudhary, who represents Aldershot at Rushmoor Borough Council, is against the plans.

“It would cause havoc if it was approved, it would be a real problem,” Cllr Choudhary said.

“I work along that road and we do have issues outside the pub during the evenings and the police are present.

“I would like to encourage a night-time economy but this would cause a problem.”

He said people in residential flats around the nightspot could be “kept up all night.” He felt strongly that residents needed to be consulted as it was they who would be affected.

He also said he did not see why this pub should remain open for longer when others in the town closed at an earlier time.

Cllr Alex Crawford, fellow borough councillor, added: “Generally, as a Wellington ward councillor, I would want to satisfy myself that none of the statutory authorities was opposing this application.

“Also, if any residents oppose it, I would want to know what measures Yates’s would take to ensure they meet residents’ concerns.

“Finally, there is a policy for Aldershot town centre presuming against extensions like this unless Yates’s can show that it meets all the conditions.”

The council has so far received one letter of objection, which said: “This is not the West End of London where such all-night activities are common, but a small town in an urban part of Hampshire.

“There should be no change to its present conditions and activities.”

A spokesman for Yates’s Aldershot said: “Yates’s trades as a late-night venue in Aldershot and only opens Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

“We have applied for an extra hour of trading as there is a market for a venue to open until 3am in the town.”

Rushmoor’s licensing sub-committee will consider the application on June 12, at the council offices in Farnborough.
