BACK in the Sixties I spent six years living in Cargate Grove, Aldershot - a tranquil area far removed from the Wild West night time town centre of those days.
So I was delighted to see that the Aldershot Historical and Archaeological Society has produced a new booklet relating the history of Cargate - "the posh part of Aldershot".
When I lived there most of the large houses that were built in the late Victorian period still survived -even if a lot were divided into flats. But in the 70s a number were pulled down to create modern flat complexes. Indeed as the booklet shows there are now only two original houses left in the Grove and two in Cargate Terrace.
The author Peter Palmer has traced early references to Cargate and provides several maps. If you would like to know more about the area send a cheque for £2.50 to include post and packing to Mrs Sue Williamson, 10 Brockenhurst Road, Aldershot, GU11 3HH (Tel 01252 326589) Cheques made payable to A.H.A.S.
