ALDERSHOT Town football fan Andy Malcomber scored the best goal of the evening on August 5 when he proposed to his girlfriend, Catherine Thompson, before the pre-season friendly with Chelsea.
Andy, 39, originally from Aldershot, now lives in Braintree with Catherine, and had been planning the surprise proposal for two months.
He said: "I go to Aldershot all the time and Cath is a Chelsea fan, so there was only one place I wanted to propose.
"There were around 6,000 people there but I don't remember them cheering or anything. I can remember getting back to my seat and thinking ‘thank God that's all over' but I don't remember much else."
Although the plan was kept secret, Andy says Catherine, from Farnborough, knew something was afoot.
He said: "She knew something was up. When we got back to our seats she said ‘Oh, I thought you had arranged for me to meet the team'."
Phil Torjussen, match day announcer at Aldershot, helped put the plan into action.
He said: "I thought it was great and was happy to help. It's the first time, as far as I'm aware, we've had a marriage proposal at a game.
"Some people might think it corny but it went down well with the audience and I thought it was really nice."
A date for the wedding has yet to be set but Andy says it will be around June next year — between any Aldershot matches.
