ARSONISTS ruined more than £2000 worth of sports equipment at a Fleet school last week.

Two teachers at Heatherside Junior School saw smoke pouring from a store shed as they were going home.

They raised the alarm and the school caretaker made an initial attempt to tackle the fire with a hand-held extinguisher.

A fire crew, who discovered the arsonist had used a brick to smash the shed window, brought the blaze under control.

The fire ruined a large amount of sports equipment including games bibs, bats, balls and other items.

A temporary stage, stored in the brick-built shed, was also wrecked.

Headteacher Heather Howlett said: "The fire has disrupted our sports activities, and the children are upset that this has happened.

"They have already suggested holding a sponsored event to raise enough money to buy new sports equipment."
