MOBILE phone giant Orange has been "bunkered" over its plan to install a 50ft tall mast on a Farnborough golf course.

Rushmoor Council planners have thrown out the company's application to site the six antennae mast, with 10 equipment cabinets, at the Southwood course.

They decided the compound would result in the loss or recreational space, and might prevent any redevelopment of the golf course.

It was also agreed that the mast and equipment would be an eyesore for people in the Ively Road area.

The decision represents a victory for 24 residents who wrote to the council development control committee objecting to the application.

They said the proposed site was too near their homes and children's play area. Southwood Residents' Association expressed similar concerns.
