SCHOOLCHILDREN took on celebrity status on Thursday when they cut the ribbon to open the new Co-op in Farnborough.

The former Alldays store on Woburn Avenue has undergone a £135,000 refit transforming it into the Co-op to offer customers more choice and eight jobs.

In return for hosting the opening ceremony, pupils from St Patrick’s Primary School in Avenue Road got a camcorder for the school.

Store manager Marc Parrott said it was great they were performing the honours: “As a community retailer it is appropriate that we involve the community in our special events and we are delighted our local school is playing a central role in the relaunch of our store.”

He said the Co-op always strove to help the community.

“Customers can earn cash back on their shopping and the modern dividend scheme also incorporates a community element with funds donated to local community projects and charities.”

The Co-operative Group acquired the Alldays chain of 600 branches last October. The Farnborough Park store is one of the first to be revamped as part of a three-year, multi-million pound conversion programme.
