TWENTY local charities are set to share in nearly £8,000 raised in a Christmas collection.

The Rotary Club of Aldershot collected £7,800 when its Christmas float toured Aldershot, Farnborough and Farnham on 12 nights in December.

Jim Hawkett, the club's community service chairman, said: "When we went out around the houses a lot of people gave us bags of pennies that they had been saving up.

"We collected about the same amount of money as last year. We are quite pleased."

The money will now be distributed to 20 different charities in Rushmoor and Waverley, including the Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice, the local branch of the Red Cross and homeless charity Emmaus Projects.
