CIRCUSES with animal acts may soon be banned from performing in the Hart Council area.

The council has agreed to consider imposing the ban following a call from Coun Carol Leversha.

She wants a district-wide by-law which "prohibits circuses using live animals for public performance or display".

In her view, she told the council, there was no excuse in the 21st century for the exploitation of animals in this way.

Part of her concern, she continued, stemmed from the conditions which circus animals were often kept in.

The council agreed that, before making a decision, interested individuals and groups should be invited to submit their views on a possible ban.
