Robber armed with axe targets Coral bookmakers in Cove

Three police vehicles were in Cove Road on Thursday as officers investigated an armed robbery involving an axe

Police in Cove Road

A raider came equipped with an axe for a daytime armed robbery at a bookmakers in Cove.

A police cordon was placed outside the Coral betting shop in Cove Road following the robbery shortly before 12.30pm on Thursday March 27.

Hampshire police said the offender entered the shop and threatened staff before making off with a small amount of cash.

No-one was injured in the incident, and the cordon remained in place until 3.30pm.

Police officers also collected fingerprint evidence, including from the front door.

Workmen near the scene said they had spotted a helicopter in the sky above Cove Road at around 12.30pm. Three police vehicles were in the street and at around 3pm and a fourth car arrived and took away three people in civilian clothing.

Just after 3.30pm, staff began to arrive at the bookmakers for the night shift.

Detective Sergeant Karen Lillywhite said: “We are particularly interested in speaking to a man, believed to be a regular customer of the shop, who spoke to another customer at the scene, but did not leave his details.”

Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Aldershot CID on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
