Commuters faced a tough journey home during Friday's rush-hour following a crash and a car fire on the southbound carriageway of the M3.

Traffic was backed up from junction 6, for Hook, to junction 2, for the M25, on Friday evening following two incidents.

At around 5.10pm, one lane was closed due to a two-car collision between junctions 6 and 7, which was cleared at 6.45pm.

Lanes one and two were closed at 5.30pm, at junction 6, due to a car fire. Although the blaze was extinguished and the car was removed from the scene, both lanes remained closed while contractors worked to repair the road surface.

A Highways Agency spokeswoman said: “The intensity of the fire caused a lot of damage to the road surface.”

Officers from the Highways Agency also had to clear debris from the road.

Queues were reported to stretch back about eight miles to junction 2, for the M25.
