The removal of retail units marks the start of the building of a new cinema
Demolition of retail units in preparation for a new cinema in Farnborough is now complete.
The former Sainsbury’s and Quality Seconds stores in Kingsmead have been demolished as part of an £80 million project to regenerate Farnborough town centre.
A new seven screen Vue cinema is being built at Kingsmead shopping centre and is on track to open next summer.
The regeneration, being carried out by St Modwen, is being brought forward in four phases.
The first two phases are already complete after the introduction of a new Sainsbury's, Travelodge, JD Wetherspoon pub and The Gym, and the creation of retail spaces for Starbucks, New Look and CeX.
Improvements to Kingsmead include new restaurants being built and the multi-storey car park is being refurbished along with new public toilets and a Shopmobility service, all set to open next year.
Work on the regeneration began in April when old retail units were stripped out and the Sainsbury’s and Quality Seconds stores were both successfully relocated.
The Quality Seconds store has been rebranded as Store 21 and opened on October 3 in Queensmead shopping centre.
James Stockdale, develop-ment surveyor for St Modwen, said: “It’s exciting to see the building works well under way for the new Vue cinema and restaurants.
“Vue is a real coup for the town centre and will attract visitors from all around the local area.
“The building works for the new cinema are progressing at speed and the multi-storey car park refurbishment is well under way.
“We’ll also be starting on the part refurbishment of the Kingsmead mall before the end of the year.”
The £1m refurbishment of Queensmead, which includes new paving and seating areas, will be celebrated with a free day-long festival.
The Farnborough Festival will hail the completion of the renovation of the pedestrianised centre on October 26.
Kicking off at 8am, the 11-hour extravaganza will conclude with a spectacular light and music finale featuring the innovative new lighting system which is being installed at the centre.
