A LOCAL woman has won a prize in a national photography competition organised by Mencap.

Alexandra Toomey, from Farnborough, will see her winning entry on display at the Victoria and Albert museum in London from February 14.

The charity, for people with learning disabilities, received over 400 entries for the competition, of which 30 will be on display.

The photographs had to be accompanied by a story by and about people with learning disabilities, and were chosen by an expert panel including David Bailey and Eamonn McCabe.

Alexandra Toomey is a support worker for Mencap.

In her story for the picture, she said: “This shows Ian (boy in picture) being engulfed by a Disney character from Monsters Inc, who sneaked up behind him for a hug.

“It captures the element of surprise in Ian’s face and the look of absolute pleasure that was part of a highly magical and unique experience.”

Ms Toomey will be attending a prize winners’ ceremony at the museum on February 18.
