A retired couple are heading for the States to take part in the New York Marathon.
Don and Margery Wakefield will be joining in the 26.2 mile race on Sunday, Nov 3, with thousands of other runners.
Don, a retired electrical engineer who worked for Solartron in Farnborough, is treasurer of the Rowhill Nature Reserve Society in Aldershot.
He and Margery, a professional pianist, have always kept fit with dog walking and cycling. They love cycling and skiing holidays, but on reaching 60, they decided to join an aerobics class.
Their instructor suggested they try running and at first even two miles was a struggle. Margery progressed faster than Don and took up the challenge of the London Marathon, completing the race in 5 hours 15 minutes.
They will be running in New York for Get Kids Going and already have sponsorship for almost £1000. The charity helps disabled youngsters to take part in sport.
Anyone who would like to sponsor the couple can do so through the field centre on 01252 319749.
