Bird strike grounds Red Arrows display team at airport

The pilot was unharmed after his plane struck a bird during a Red Arrows verification flight at Farnborough Airport on Wednesday

Firefighters checked over a Red Arrow plane which struck a bird during a Farnborough Airshow practice run on Wednesday.

Five fire engines attended the incident at Farnborough Airport just after 2pm.

The pilots were verifying their flight path for the event next weekend, when one of the Red Arrow Hawks aircraft hit a bird.

The Red Arrows practice display was stopped immediately as a precaution.

Paul Burton, watch manager at Rushmoor fire station, said: "The pilot landed safely and he was unharmed.

"As a precaution and part of protocol, we went to make sure everything was fine.

"We would respond to any incident with an aircraft which could involve a possible uncontrolled landing."

Two fire engines from Farnborough, one from Basingstoke, one from Camberley and one from Hartley Wintley attended.

A water carrier from Camberley and an environmental protection vehicle from Alton were also sent to the scene.
