YOUNG pop musicians will have a chance to learn, perform and record thanks to a grant earned by a Yateley teenager.

Eighteen-year-old David Carpenter (pictured) devised a project to encourage new talent and was given £3,884 to fulfil it by the Your Shout Millennium Awards scheme.

Your Shout is a partnership between Hampshire County Council and the Millennium Commission which gives 18 to 28 year olds the chance to use new technology creatively to benefit the community.

David's project — The Battle of the Bands — will bring five local bands together for an evening to perform for friends and family.

Beforehand they will attend master classes run by professional musicians and make a CD, to which their live performance will be added.

David said the project will revolve around Yateley School, adding: "This is a wonderful opportunity for me to learn new skills, like how to organise a huge event!

"I'm looking forward to being able to offer real support for local bands, giving them access to a recording studio and a platform to perform."

Scheme adviser Clare Hobbs said: "I continue to work with all the successful applicants to make sure they and their local community get the most from each project."

Deadline for the next awards is March 4. Call Clare at Hampshire County Council on 01962 864379 or 02380 732981, or visit www.your-shout.org.uk, for details.
