MAJOR plans to change the face of part of Aldershot's High Street have been unveiled.

The ABC cinema, bingo hall and King's Church Centre will be demolished under Rushmoor Council's blueprint.

Shops and homes will be included in the proposed redevelopment which will also encompass the former petrol station site and possibly the Prince's Gardens car park.

New facilities would be provided for the King's Church. The ABC owners have already announced that the cinema is set to close.

Coun. David Clifford, leisure and promotion cabinet member, said: "This site provides a great opportunity to regenerate the town, particularly by improving facilities for shoppers."

The council's aim, he added, was to produce a scheme which was well designed and which provided a range of suitable uses.

As a first step, local people will be able to view the scheme at the Visitor Information Centre in the High Street from November 4 to December 2.

They should send their comments to Keith Holland, council planning chief, Rushmoor Council Offices, Farnborough Road, Farnborough, Hants GU14 7JU.
