AN Aldershot couple who flew off for a holiday in India on Saturday got a phone call from their son a day later to tell them that a conifer tree in their garden had crashed onto their garage roof.
Gurpal and Bina Thaper have lived in Grosvenor Road for more than 20 years and the tree was there before they moved in. At Christmas Mr Thaper always put a few decorations onto it.
Their son Harjinder told the Star: "I don't know just how much damage has been caused until we get the tree removed. Luckily it is only used for storage."
The Thapers were among hundreds of local people who suffered damage to fences and gutters. Trees fell on houses and roads were blocked throughout the district with major disruption to rail services.
Hampshire Fire and Rescue said their weekend was twice as busy as usual although the worst affected area was near the coast.
In the Camberley area trees blocked roads at Deepcut, Heatherside and near the fire station in London Road.
There were also major incidents in Fleet, Farnborough and Yateley.
