Farnborough Sixth Form College held two certificate evenings recently - one for the A-level students who were the last year under the old system and one for the new AS level students.

The college itself won acclaim from a recent Ofsted inspection, which issued a glowing report.

MP Stephen Timms, Minister for School Standards, gave out the A level certificates. He is an old boy of the college, from the days when it was Farnborough Grammar School.

Dr Kate Pretty, Principal of Homerton College, Cambridge, spoke at the AS level evening.

Among many awards for achievements over the two evenings was an Institute of Physics certificate which went to Joycelyn Williams.

Joycelyn (17) lives in Camberley and is hoping to study physics at university.

"I was really surprised that my work was selected for this recognition," she said.

Dr Pretty, speaking about the new system of AS exams, said: "The breadth of education available to her presents a real challenge to us in the universities. I have been delighted by the enthusiasm of all those I have met."
