A fire that broke out in the middle of the night at a small block of flats in Aldershot is being investigated as a potential arson.

All occupants of the flat were evacuated from the building in the High Street, near Burger King, at 3.40am on Saturday as smoke poured from the basement.

A Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said the cause of the fire was unknown but thought to have been started deliberately and the arson task force is studying the incident, along with Hampshire Constabulary CSI officers.

Breathing apparatus was used to enter the building and extinguish the fire.
