A major new Army barracks to house 1Bn the Royal Welch Fusiliers is being officially opened at Aldershot today (Thurs, Mar 6) by Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon.
The £39 million Mons Barracks complex includes living quarters, offices, messes, stores, technical facilities and garages.
Mons is one of a number of major projects which will upgrade Aldershot's military town. Over the next eight years another £200 million will be invested in a variety of schemes. The master plan is to replace all the outdated and inadequate military housing to ease recruitment problems.
Surplus acres will be sold off by the army in the area between Aldershot and North Camp and thousands of new civilian homes are expected to be built as well, which will help defray costs.
