The centre will offer testing, HIV treatment and care, specialist contraception, unplanned pregnancy services and referral for vasectomy
A new sexual health service has opened in Aldershot, providing free, confidential advice and a walk-in screening service.
The Solent NHS Trust integrated Aldershot Sexual Health Services centre offers access to sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment services, HIV treatment and care, specialist contraception, unplanned pregnancy services and referral for vasectomy.
The centre is on the fourth floor of the Aldershot Centre for Health, in Hospital Hill, and guided tours were offered to visitors on the opening day on September 20.
The ribbon was cut by the mayor of Rushmoor Terry Bridgeman.
Charlotte Bemand, sexual health services operational director, said: “We are committed to providing high quality sexual health services throughout Hampshire so we are delighted to be opening this Aldershot Centre for Health hub.
“The local community is at the heart of our work and we feel, by opening our doors to local GPs, voluntary sector partners and local stakeholders who may refer patients to us, they will have the opportunity to talk to us directly about the range of services on offer.”
In June, Rushmoor was found to have the highest rate of STIs across the Hampshire-Surrey border.
Data from Public Health England showed that the borough had an STI rate of 796 per 100,000 people compared with a Hampshire average of 583.
The most common infection was chlamydia, cases of which have increased in Rushmoor since 2011 but fallen in Waverley, Guildford, Hart and Surrey Heath.
The new Aldershot centre is purpose-built, and allows patients privacy during consultations. Anyone seeking services such as screening for STIs or contraception advice can simply walk in and see a nurse, however, some specialist services, such as termination of pregnancy and specialist HIV support, require appointments with a doctor.
Other services offered include psychosexual counselling, genito-urinary consultation and sexual assault advice.
