TWO old school-friends had plenty to talk about - even though it was the first time they had met for 65 years.

Apart from old times, Mrs Edna Witts and Fred Ricketts discovered that they both had close links with Canada.

Edna, 82, a widow, of Woodlands Road, Cove, has scores of friends in that country, and 83-year-old Fred lives there.

"It was uncanny really," she said. "I've been to Canada many times, most recently to celebrate my 80th birthday, and I had no idea Fred was living there."

The pair were school-friends in Bracknell, but lost touch when Fred, now a widower, joined the Air Force before settling in Canada.

They made contact again after Edna's son, Paul, put her name on the Friends Reunited website "for a bit of fun".

After writing to each other, they met up when Fred, who lives in Nova Scotia, came over to visit his sisters at Wokingham.

"We had a great time," said Edna.
