A suspicious fire in the basement of an Aldershot block of flats put lives at risk, police have said.

Firefighters were called to the blaze, at around 3.40am on Saturday (May 31), in the basement of a building in the High Street.

Crews managed to put out the fire while residents were evacuated from the building.

It is believed the blaze was started deliberately and Hampshire Constabulary said the incident was being investigated as "arson endangering lives".

Police have now appealed for witnesses who were in the High Street or Barrack Road area around the time, and who may have seen the fire or any suspicious behaviour, to get in touch.

Anyone with information should call Detective Constable Andrew Grieve at Aldershot CID on 101 or contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
