Police carried out a large-scale road check operation this week in an attempt to catch the teenage girls who robbed a pensioner on Monday last week.

Exactly a week after the robbery took place, officers from Aldershot CID and 12 traffic police set up a road block at the junction of Alexandra Road and Reading Road and questioned all drivers passing through.

The police stopped hundreds of motorists during the rush hour to find out whether they had been in the area at 6pm on bank holiday Monday when the attack took place, and to show them the CD fit (pictured) of one of the pensioners assailants.

They kept traffic congestion to a minimum by using a large number of officers to carry out the inquiry and control traffic, and by only holding back motorists who were in the area at the time of the robbery, or who had information relating to the CD fit.

Det Con Steve Mellish, of Aldershot CID, said: “People were very co-operative and we now have some valuable leads to follow up as a result.

“However, we would appeal to anyone who was driving along the A325 on the bank holiday between 5pm and 7.30pm who may have seen two teenage girls about 18 years old running down the road.”

It was not possible to carry out a similar road check on the A325 because of the massive congestion it would have caused.

Det Con Mellish, added: “The size of this investigation reflects the seriousness of this offence. Residents of North Camp are shocked by this robbery and are as anxious as we are to catch and detain these girls.”

He said elderly people should not be frightened by the attack. “This is a one-off incident, I don’t recall the last time something similar happened in this area.”

The pensioner, who is a 75 year-old widow, was attacked at around 6pm on bank holiday Monday in Reading Road, close to the corner of Alexandra Road by two 18 year-old girls. They fractured the elderly lady’s shoulder during the assault, stole her handbag and left her with serious cuts and bruises.

The girls ran off down Reading Road towards the airport and then along the Farnborough Road. The first attacker is 5ft 6ins, with dark hair and was wearing a long beige coat with a fur collar, and the other as 5ft 2ins, also slim with dark hair, wearing a blue jacket and skirt.
