Two lanes closed on busy M3 as firefighters tackle the car fire on the hard shoulder
Rush hour traffic was severely disrupted on Monday morning (September 9) after a car caught fire on the busy M3.
The blaze caused two lanes of the southbound motorway to be closed between junction 4a at Farnborough and Fleet Services.
Drivers had to approach the incident with care as smoke blew across the motorway from the blazing car parked on the hard shoulder.
Eye witness Darren Woollard was on his usual commute from Dorset to Xtravirt Ltd in Leatherhead, Surrey, when he came across the fire and took this picture.
"After passing over the brow of the hill at Fleet Services heading eastbound, I could see a plume of smoke," he said.
"As I approached it was clear to see that a vehicle was on fire, which resulted in the traffic coming to an abrupt halt due to the inevitable 'rubber necking'.
"At this time no fire engines were present and the fire had fully taken control with the front of the vehicle engulfed.
"It was somewhat concerning to see the driver had vacated the vehicle but was stood only about three car lengths away. Not an ideal safe distance from a vehicle on fire with fuel on board."
