SANDHURST Memorial Park, the scene of a long running row over the Coffee Spot, now has a new argument -over who is allowed to sell alcoholic drinks in the grounds.

Sandhurst Town Council was told on Thursday that the football club had applied for a licence to sell alcohol -and Sandhurst Sports Club is objecting. There had also been complaints that the cricket club was selling alcohol from its pavilion.

The licensing application is due to reach court on September 20 and the council is now talking to the football club and hoping it can be withdrawn while the matter is thrashed out. The sports club, according to senior councillor Diana Pidgeon, was guaranteed that it would be the only licensed premises on the park.

Football spokesman Mr Phil Sigley said afterwards that every other club in the same league had a bar. They had nothing against the sports club but needed the bar to help with the club's financial progress.
