SANDHURST husband and wife councillors Paul and Jean Bettison were likened to Posh and Becks at Thursday's annual meeting when Jean was elected as the new town Mayor.

Liberal Democrat opponent Ray Earwicker said he was disappointed that Mrs Bettison had been the only nomination in view of the fact that her husband was Leader of Bracknell Forest.

"We are going down the route of the Beckhams - it is going to be Bettison Palace as far as Sandhurst is concerned" he gibed.

The new Mayor said she would do her best for all the people of Sandhurst.

Retiring Mayor Coun. Audrey Shephard reported a wonderful year. She felt very honoured and at the same time humbled to have held the post.

Mrs Shephard said she had been amazed to find out how many people worked for the good of others in the town. Having so many voluntary organisations made the community what it was.

She announced that her charity, the Howard Stilliard Memorial Fund, had raised £1,352.80 -including the £350 residue from her mayoral allowance that she had donated. The new Deputy Mayor is Coun. Nick Skinner.
