FIVE men were arrested during the early hours after Hart's "spy" cameras zoomed in on a burglary at a village shop.

The suspects, who were taken to Aldershot police station for questioning, were seen acting suspiciously near the store.

When officers arrived they discovered that a window at the One Stop Shop in Hartley Wintney had been smashed.

They later recovered items which had been taken during the burglary which happened at about 3am on Tuesday last week.

The alarm was raised by operators at the CCTV nerve centre at Hart Council offices in Fleet.

They saw the occupants of a car acting suspiciously and directed officers from Fleet and Yateley to the scene.

Chief Inspector Chris Brown, of Aldershot police, said: "This is an excellent example of how CCTV can be used to direct police to offences as they happen.

"Events like this show how effective it can be in acting as the eyes of the community."

Police at Camberley also arrested several villains after being alerted by CCTV operators in March.

Three men were taken into custody for causing actual bodily harm after a fight outside Joe Bananas night club.

Two women and a man were arrested in the High Street following a struggle with police officers, and a man was apprehended after a shop window was smashed.

Two others were arrested, one for a suspected drugs offence and another for drink-driving.
