NEW "spy" cameras are helping to make Rushmoor's streets safer, according to the borough council.

Almost 400 incidents have been caught on the CCTV system launched several months ago.

Police have arrested 57 people, with the help of the cameras, for alleged offences including drink driving, assault and criminal damage. These numbers showed a sharp rise during the busy period up to Christmas. The cameras are in place across the borough, including Aldershot and Farnborough town centres, and North Camp.

They are monitored 24-hours a day by staff based at Rushmoor Council offices.
