Step by Step Summer Sleepout returns

Brave souls were enduring the elements by sleeping outdoors to raise money for Aldershot's Step by Step homelessness charity

Shahid Azeem will be taking part in the sleepout

Hardy supporters of an Aldershot homelessness charity will brave the elements and experience a night sleeping outdoors to raise money for those who do it for real on Friday night (June 20).

The annual Step by Step Summer Sleepout returns to Aldershot Town FC's Electrical Services Stadium on June 20 after the 2013 event raised a record £12,000.

Armed with warm clothes, sheets of cardboard and sleeping bags, the latest group to take on the challenge will arrive at 7pm and enjoy entertainment.

The event is not only a chance to experience the life of a street-sleeper in a safe environment, but also gives participants a chance to meet Step by Step clients and gain sponsorship for the charity.

Aldershot Town FC chairman Shahid Azeem will be sleeping where he is more accustomed to cheering on his team as he takes part for the first time.

New mayor Diane Bedford will be part of a team of around 10 members of Rushmoor Borough Council joining in.

Cllr Bedford, who is also a director at Step by Step, said the experience offered by the event was valuable.

"Apart from the fact we're experiencing what a lot of people do - sleeping in doorways and other areas - we're supporting the charity too," she said.

"It will be in many ways a fun event, but with a serious message. It's one night in our lives to sleep out and others do it every night for years and years.

"We're not alone but others are, which is the frightening thing for me."

She added: "Having done it last year I'm mentally prepared for it. I wasn't that cold last year, but I do remember some advice about bringing a hat. I'm glad I did that, although I didn't look that glamorous."

Others taking part in the 2014 challenge are a team from the youth group at St Paul's Church in Tongham, led by Reverend Claire Holt and Lady Lizzie Howarth, wife of Aldershot MP Sir Gerald.

Eight-year-old Erin Mitchell, from Aldershot, will again be taking part. She completed the sleepout in 2013.

Entertainment will be provided by singer Pritee Hurman, known as Big Mama Funk from her appearance on Britain's Got Talent in 2011.
