THE recent competition to find North Hampshire's best barbecue chef, held at Redfields Garden Centre, Church Crookham, was a scorching success.

The competition was set up in conjunction with Kestrel FM and set out to highlight National BBQ week and remind visitors to Redfields of the mouth watering smells associated with a summer barbecue.

The competitors were recruited through adverts run on Kestrel and in the Surrey - Hants Star. Once the final ten had been chosen, they met at Redfields to cook a preset, three course menu, in full view of plenty of onlookers, while being entertained by the Kestrel FM road show.

The winner was Steve Norris, judged by Chris Dayer from Dayer's Bistro in Basingstoke. He won a television and a DVD player and the other contestants kept their barbecues, as runner up prizes, as well as each having a barbecue bonanza box filled with BBQ goodies.

Simon Beddoe, from Redfields Garden Centre, said: "We were delighted to host the competition, which also gave us a chance to showcase the wide range of barbecue accessories and garden furniture that we have on display in the store this year. The weather has been wonderful lately and the aromas of outdoor cooking are filling the air in Surrey and Hampshire."
