POLICE have warned that "summertime thefts" are on the increase in the Star area.

They have recorded a rise in garden shed break-ins and thefts of bicycles since the better weather started.

Lawnmowers, hedge cutters and strimmers are being targeted by the villains.

Opportunist thieves are also making off with bicycles which have been left outside without being secured.

Inspector Duncan Weston, of Aldershot police, said the thefts could be prevented by "good common sense".

He urged residents to buy a strong door lock for their garden sheds and, if possible, to chain up lawnmowers and similar items.

To keep burglars at bay, he said householders should fit locks which allow windows to be left partially open in warm weather.

"These locks will help prevent thieves getting into people's homes," added Insp. Weston.
