SURREY Heath's 13 strong Liberal Democrat opposition group walked out of the council's annual meeting in protest at what their leader, Coun. David Whitcroft, described as "the overbearing, arrogant and undemocratic behaviour of the Conservative group."

The Conservatives, who now have a majority of just four, in a council on which they once held every seat, were attacked for nominating their own Mayor and Deputy Mayor, and over select committee and working party appointments.

Deputy Liberal Democrat Leader Duncan Clark said the Conservatives had put disproportionate numbers of their councillors on the Camberley Town Centre Working Group - the committee designed to steer through the land west of Park Street development. "This blatant packing of such an important working group makes us wonder if they are preparing for bad news- or getting ready to ram through unpopular decisions on this multi million pound development," he observed.
