SURREY Heath Council has "named and shamed" 233 council tax dodgers. Those on the list, published by the council, have disappeared owing a total of £238,492.

None of them could be traced, with the largest amount - £4,079 - being owed by a former resident of a house in Coleford Bridge Road, Mytchett.

A further 30 people are listed as having absconded, owing a total of £76,225 in non-domestic rates. By far the largest single amount is £13,876 owed by one man. In a report the council was told that "exhaustive efforts" had been made to trace the debtors, but without success.

The total amount of £314,717 has been written off by the council, along with £121,457 owed by businesses which have gone bust.
