FLEET Pond Society launched the Sandy Bay "Sponsor a Plank" boardwalk as its 25th anniversary project in April, 2001.
Two years later, it has reached its goal and 740 planks have been sponsored by members of the society and other visitors to Fleet Pond Nature Reserve. The amount raised towards the boardwalk was £3,700 and the society would like to thank everyone who participated.
Barbara Martin, the society's secretary, has been on her knees numbering every plank so that when sponsors visit the reserve they can find their own particular plank. Barbara said that the response has been marvellous and people have sponsored planks for themselves, their children, grandchildren and even dogs!
Many planks have been sponsored in memory of people who have enjoyed the peace and beauty of the reserve.
Money is still coming in, so another boardwalk is now being sponsored which runs from near Westover Road through a very wet and muddy area, by the Bog Myrtle Glade.
There are 230 planks here that can be sponsored for £5 each and already 23 have been "booked"
